Cross casting has a long history, from ancient Greek and English Renaissance theatre to Japanese Kabuki and South Asian traditions such as Bharatanatyam and Jatra. It challenges conventional ideas of gender by showing that physical appearance does not have to define identity or expression. Social systems shape our understanding of gender, but these systems are created by people and can change with time, allowing greater space for individuality and freedom. Through cross-casting, artists can question gender barriers, inequality, and social restrictions while encouraging a more open understanding of gender and identity. The exhibition at Britto continues this exploration by transforming the gallery space and creating new possibilities through different artworks.
